HOW IT WORKS

â—Ź Pool Heat pump extracts warmth from ambient air
● Transfers heat into pool water via heat exchanger
● Warm water circulates through your pool

Frequently Asked Questions

Swimming pool heat pumps use electricity and the ambient air to heat your pool water, by transferring heat.

A fan draws heat from the outside or ambient air over the evaporator coil and the liquid in the coil heats up to become a gas, which passes through a compressor where it becomes even hotter. Pool water is pumped through the other side of the heat exchanger, and as the gas and the pool water move through the heat exchanger together a transfer of heat occurs. The heated pool water returns to the pool and the cooled liquid returns to the evaporator coil where the cycle begins again.

It is preferable to have it nearby because heat can be lost on the journey to the pool, so the shorter the pipe runs, the better.
Yes, electricity is needed to run the fan and the compressor.

This is dependent on the size of the pool heat pump, the size of the swimming pool as well as other environmental factors like the weather conditions. Worst case scenario it can take up to 84 hours to initially heat the pool by 8 to 10°.

Environmental factors can influence this as the ambient air is used to heat the liquid in the coils, the lower your ambient, the longer it will take, and vice versa the warmer their ambient, the quicker it will take care.

Let’s start with understanding COP or Coefficient of performance, which means input vs output, a resistive element for example has a COP of 1, which means for every 1kw of power put in, 1 kw of power output is produced.

Resistive Heating elements use this ratio making it very inefficient and costly when heating large volumes of water and their life span is often limited and requires regular replacement. The upfront costs are however cheaper than heat pump. These heating devices are found in geysers and jacuzzi.

Pool Heat Pumps are purpose-built with titanium heat exchangers suitable for most swimming pool water qualities including saltwater swimming pools. Their COPs range between 4 and 16, e.g. 1 kw input could mean as much as 16 kw output, although the initial costs are much higher than a resistive element, the running cost could be up to 16 times less.

Yes, there is an inverter-type and standard on/off pool heat pump technology.

Inverter-type swimming pool heat pumps have a variable speed compressor, allowing the compressor to determine and run at optimal speed based on its environment, thus increasing its efficiency (COP) and further reducing its electrical consumption, saving you on utility and running costs. They also have “soft starts” which means that the compressor starts slowly and does not require high current on startup.

The standard on/off heat pump draws a large amount of current to start up the compressor which can put strain on the electrical supply.

Inverter-type heat pumps operate at an average of 4 times more efficiently than the standard on/off heat pump and with their “softer” start they are preferred.

It could be possible; however, it largely depends on the size of the PV system and pool heat pump, the type of swimming pool heat pump and the required run time.

Yes, the surface of the pool and the ground that the pool is in, can influence the time to heat the pool.

Yes. SunScan Pool Heat Pumps don’t rely on direct sunlight to operate — they draw warmth from the surrounding air, so they can run efficiently both day and night. This means your pool stays at a consistent, comfortable temperature around the clock.

Not at all. SunScan’s larger units operate at under 46 dB — that’s about the same noise level as a quiet conversation or gentle rainfall. The advanced compressor and fan design ensure whisper-quiet performance, so you can relax by the pool without any background hum.

Running costs vary depending on the size of the unit, pool volume, and how often the pump is used. In general, Pool Heat Pumps are one of the most energy-efficient heating options available, using minimal electricity compared to the heat output they deliver. For a more accurate estimate, consult your installer, who can calculate usage based on your specific pool and climate conditions.
